Poker Room introduces cash mobile phone games application for Sony/Ericsson K770i

By Online Gambling Directory

Online gambling operator Poker Room has unveiled its new service allowing users indulge in poker playing for money through their mobile phones. The mobile gambling service first will be suitable for one model only - Sony/Ericsson K770i, the other models of mobile phones will be served shortly thereafter.
The mobile application has been geared to reconcile with a network supporting GPRS, and a service provider who runs a certain kind of mobile applications (GSM, WCDMA, TDMA). So far, the company hasn't specified whether any US mobile phone carriers will serve the new opportunity.
Poker Room, which has been working for six month at the mobile gambling service, has become the first company to provide cash poker opportunity to mobile phones despite a number of operators have been trying to do this. The product meets a demand for mobile phone games options and may be a lucrative business at the moment. The mobile gambling market currently has the highest growth potential; its revenues are expected to increase six fold over the next four years, becoming nearly a $20 billion dollar a year global business by 2009.
"Mobile poker is a natural evolution for what is fast becoming the nation's cult game." Notes Patrik Selin, CEO of Poker Room. "You can play poker over your handset anywhere, anytime. The advance of mobile phone games graphics on Sony/Ericsson K770i makes the experience almost identical to that of playing poker online."

Mobile gambling services total market

Some analysts believe that, regulatory restrictions notwithstanding, the potential for mobile gambling revenues is substantial. They believe that, combined, the three strands of mobile gambling services outlined above will generate revenues of more than US$19.3bn by 2009, or nearly one-third of all mobile entertainment revenues. Indeed, should gambling regulators in countries such as the US and China become more liberal in their attitude towards the mobile gambling services, then revenues could far exceed these estimates. Furthermore, we have deliberately sought to be conservative in our estimates of mobile lottery. Given the ubiquity of mobile handsets, and the desire of many lottery providers to exploit this, then potentially the resulting sales of mobile gambling services could be substantially higher.

Total Revenues from Mobile Gambling Services (US$m). Forecast 2004-2009

As it is, analysts believe mobile lottery will be the most successful of all forms of mobile gambling services, accounting for around 40% of all mobile gambling revenues (or nearly US$7.9bn) by 2009. Already, mobile lottery services are up and running in a number of countries, and popularity of mobile lottery is expected to mushroom in the medium term.
That said, we also have high hopes for both mobile sports betting and mobile casino services, with the former expected to be worth around US$6.9 bn by 2009 and the latter worth nearly US$4.6 bn.
The market for the mobile gambling services is potentially vast; it is now up to the mobile phone games service providers to seize the opportunity.
